ATSC 2019: Record-Breaking Expansion

Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada is back for its fourth year August 19th-21st, 2019 at the International Centre in Toronto. ATSC 2019 promises significant changes and record-breaking expansion and attendance.

CEO Jason Prescott shared, ATSC is coming back to Canada in a big way for the fourth year, a testament to its market need and success as a must-attend event for Canadian and American representatives to connect with hundreds of factories from around the world under one roof.” He continued that ATSC’s “unique merger of Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter merchandise” adds to its cache. At the same time, the unique representation of government officials of over 20 countries and thousands of apparel and textile industry executives creates an atmosphere you cannot find at any other show.

ATSC: Not your average trade show

Jeff Streader, CEO of GoGobal Retail added, “ATSC has set a new standard for the production of a sourcing event, not only for Canada but for the apparel industry at large. He believes that the show placed Toronto on the map “like Hong Kong and Paris as an earmark destination for manufacturers from around the world to meet with brands at retailers at their front door.”

Moreover, Steve Tipton, Executive Director of TFO Canada, expressed the value of ATSC’s ability to create new relationships between countries, manufacturers, artisans and more. “The show has proven to be an excellent venue, providing a unique platform for many small and medium-sized enterprises to make essential connections with Canadian buyers.”

New at ATSC 2019

ATSC will continue to have a daily roster of seminars from industry experts such as: Bob Kirke, Executive Director of Canadian Apparel Federation; Julie Hughes, President of the U.S. Fashion Industry Association; Diego Diaz, Trade Commissioner representing Guatemala; Avedis Seferian, President and CEO of WRAP; and Tony Sciarrotta, Executive Director of the Reverse Logistics Association.

Although, this year will see an expansion in product offerings and a new wholesale supplier section and features on advancements in fashion and eco-friendly textiles. Two factors at the forefront of the industry are impacting the show this year: sustainability and speed-to-market. As a matter of fact, the McKinsey State of Fashion report lists these as “critical success factors” for apparel firms.

Spotlight on sustainability

Ultimately, the industry is experiencing a shift towards eco-friendly practices and production. As a result, featured seminar topics include sustainability updates, repairing fragmented supply chains, and importing and exporting issues. Even so, Bob Kirke said that “people are more mindful than ever before about how and where their clothing is made. In the same way, Pamela Lokser, Director of Softgoods Imports, emphasizes the importance of these concerns when vetting suppliers. She states, “Although rigorous, these factors are a must.”


Shifts in consumer mindset have turned the industry on its head. One of those factors is speed-to-market. In fact, this is now one of the top three deciding factors in nominating vendors along with price and quality. Last year, Avenue at ATS came to fruition which allowed buyers to order from exhibitors and have their orders fulfilled immediately.

This year, India has a larger-than-ever Indian Pavillion. Now, attendees can source wool products, basic knitwear, suiting, additional woven items, leather accessories, silk products, home textiles, and other specialty goods. Chandrika Behl, organizer of Indian exhibitors at ATSC, said, “In 2017-2018 India’s textile exports stood at $39.2 billion, and are poised to grow significantly in the years to come.” Arguably, this is due to Indian factories adapting to this new speed-to-market. They are “facilitating to the needs of smaller brands and enterprise level buyers, who produce goods for six to eight seasons per year.
